Behaviour in sustainability transitions: A mixed methods literature review

Sustainability transitions require changing many behaviours embedded in production and consumption systems. Simultaneously, behavioural public policy is now a significant site of research-policy translation globally. Links between behaviour system change are underdeveloped both fields. Systematic review current literature found ∼4% papers focused on behaviour. Two prominent perspectives (labelled: ‘everyday’ ‘strategic’) critical focus individuals, preferencing broader analysis. additional were identified - ‘automatic’ ‘reflective’ which highlight immediate local influences but underemphasise context. All four draw different conceptualisations, causality, methods disciplinary foundations, yet all have value application to transitions. We argue that complimentary flexible approach would benefit the field, considering diversity phases, scales contexts sustainability Transitions’ own could also help address policy's challenges.
